The Day The Music Died

It is a sad day for me. The day I have been dreading has finally arrived. I knew it would happen, I just didn't think it would be so soon. My favorite cd has died.
Please hold while I play a montage of me and my VAST Visual Audio Sensory Theater cd skipping and twirling in a field, laughing at little kids playing baseball in a park, sharing a plate of noodles in a candle lit Italian restaurant, crying in the rain after a fight and eating ice cream on a beach.
We have been through some good times. I remember the day I bought him, 8th grade continuation. Fresh from the ceramony to Twist and Shout. It was beautiful. I remember zoning out for hours on end listing to it and discovering that it is in fact a fantastic cd to put on while falling asleep.
Six years later, thousands of plays later and having traveled all over the world with me. He has died.
Rio. Big fucking river.

I had a friend who had a cd player which had the unique quality that when you inserted a cd into it and pressed play, the little laser would get all psyched up, and start lasering its little heart out. But it's friend, the cd spinning mechanism, would not hold up its end of the bargain -- the end result being that the laser would burn a hole into and eventually through the cd, as its revolutions per minute were an alarmingly low 0. Ultimately this was a blessing, as the CD that first bit the bullet was REM's 'Monster', a terrible CD not worthy of the electricity required to power the player.
I realize this does little to cheer you up. I just paused for a moment and tried to think of how you could turn this into a positive experience. I believe I have succeeded. I have come up with something which I believe has never been attempted before, but may become bigger than anything we've ever seen before.
Here it is: You take a blank CD and stick it in the mail, addressed to someone you know. You include a set of instructions with the CD. The instructions tell the person to stick a song they love onto the CD, then mail the CD to someone they know, who will then do the same. The instructions will also tell whoever puts the song on the CD which renders it full to mail it back to you. Each person would also have to include the reason they chose the song they chose, and who they are and where they're from, and maybe how they know the person who sent the CD to them.
That, ladies and gentlemen is a cool idea.
